Hebble - World Music Folk Band, with support from Boba Swing - Hot club classics

Transport yourself into the old world as these two traditional trios whisky you from a foot-tapping porch, to a whaling barn, and into a late night dive bar.

Boba Swing will immerse you to the heady jazz clubs of 1930s&40s Paris and the legendary guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt before venturing further afield fusing elements from the group’s own musical backgrounds of Argentinian Tango, Romani trad. and Latin American Jazz.

Hebble, meanwhile, carefully crafts arrangements of rare, old and beautiful folk songs from Bulgaria, Poland, Czechia, Italy, Britain, Ireland and America, as well as original songs and tunes about the legends of the British Isles. In multiple languages and with belting rhythms and plenty of craic, lose yourself completely in the three-part harmonies and soaring melodies.

Meet the bands

Hebble:
• Sam Hodgson – Greek bouzouki and vocals
• Aidan Kilroy – Bodhran and vocals
• Helena Drumm – Cello and vocals

Boba Swing:
• Susannah Simmons – violin
• Vernon Bigsby – guitar
• Gerard Paul Cavallari – guitar and vocals

What the critics say (HEBBLE):

‘Hebble came to Beverley Folk Festival on strong recommendations and they did not disappoint; refreshingly different, fantastic instrumentalists, lovely people. They’re going to be huge’ Phil Simpson, Beverley Folk Festival

Lively world folk  upbeat and interactive with twists of the alternative, and plenty of three-part harmonies.  Probably the only trio in the world with a Greek bouzouki, cello and bodhran!

A unique and refreshing instrument line-up. Great skill, energy,  passion and brilliant audience participation for all to enjoy.

Medusa Quartet - UK Tour Date

With their debut album, nominated for a 2024 Canadian Folk Music Award for Instrumental Group of the Year,  Medusa’s dynamic arrangement style cross-pollinates the sounds of Middle Eastern, Scandinavian, Celtic, Appalachian, and Eastern European music, as well as original tunes, to create something previously unheard.

Medusa is : Georgia Hathaway, Lea Kirstein, Marta Sołek, and Saskia Tomkins (originally from the UK and now based in Canada). For these four seasoned string players, whose collective experience spans decades, Medusa is a refuge for natural creation.

Marta Solek and Saskia Tomkins resurrect the Suka, the Płosk fidel, and the Nyckelharpa  –  near-forgotten traditional folk fiddles with disreputable connotations that were rejected for centuries in their home countries of Poland and Sweden.

Northern Silents - Silent film night with live music

Award winning Klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and American pianist Donald Sosin conclude their Northern Silents residency with a remarkable film – found in Paris flea market in 2015 after being lost since the 1930s.

    The film

Set in the Vienna-like city of Utopia, The City Without Jews follows the political and personal consequences of an anti-Semitic law to expel the city’s Jews.

The film had its final screening in Amsterdam in 1933, as a protest against the Nazis – after which it was thought that every copy had been destroyed.

Miraculously, in 2015 a complete print of the film was discovered in a Paris flea market. Beautifully restored by Filmarchiv Austria – and almost exactly a century after its Vienna premiere – this disturbing and unique film now has its first screening in Manchester.

    The music

Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin have been bringing audiences to their feet throughout the U.S. and Europe with their unique and stirring violin and piano scores for Jewish-themed silent films. Sosin is one of the world’s finest silent film musicians; Svigals is the world’s leading klezmer violinist and a founder of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics.
